The Weird World of Facebook

My husband and I have been trying to re-learn the Landler - that Austrian Folk Dance made famous in the Sound of Music - which we danced for the first dance at our wedding. We decided to turn to YouTube to see if we could get a little help. We found one sample online that we particularly liked and I thought I'd throw it on my Facebook account because it was an easy place to save it so we could watch it again later and maybe share it with the teens in our homeschool group who were interested in learning it. So I posted it with a brief word of explanation:

"No, we don't know these people. Just interested in trying to remember the dance."

The joke was on me.

One of my Facebook friends alerted me to the fact that it is from the wedding of a college classmate. My only excuse for not picking up on it is that, not only was I not at the wedding, but the three friends of mine involved in the dance (the groom and two of his groomsmen) were wearing hats, which makes them a lot harder to pick out in the video.

Here's the video:

Beautiful Photography

My friend Mary is an amazing photographer and just put up her professional website (still in progress - I think ONLY the galleries are working so far). The galleries are really worth a peek!!!

We're the proud owners of...

a new couch! It's actually a couch (sectional) that was in my brother-in-law's basement for years, but it's quite a bit nicer (and seats a lot more) than our old couch. (He's got a really nice basement!)

Frank had this to say: "Everybody that God made can maybe fit on this couch!"

Mommy says (chuckling): "We seem to be the last owners of a lot of couches!"

The best thing was, after emptying out all the seats in our big van and driving over to pick it up and load it, I was really not looking forward to helping take it out of the car. Well, voila, suddenly I realized that, being the Grand Central Station that we are, a mini-convergence of homeschool car-poolers to a youth group would be converging at our house for a small time period. An extra dad and two strong teenage boys were soon rounded up and those pieces were inside in no time, despite that fact that they didn't fit through the garage door and had to be carried all the way around (through the not-quite-shoveled snow) to the back.

Thanks - I needed that! :)

Sending All Those Christmas Pictures Apparently Paid Off...

Ria was eating breakfast at a restaurant in D.C. yesterday (along with her grandparents and cousins with whom she's making the trip) when a lady approached them.

"Wow. You guys look really familiar. Are you by any chance Van Heckes?" she asked.

It was a roommate of mine from college (who was also in my wedding). Who I haven't seen in 15 years. And who lives in Arizona. How cool is that? :)

Roman Holiday Party

The Roman Holiday Party was a lot of fun. We sang Marian hymns for the feast day, ate all kinds of Roman food (ham with plum sauce, foccacia, libum, chickpeas, olives, dates, custard pie, pomegranates and much more), played Latin bingo (and old game we inherited from a Latin tutor who died of cancer earlier this year - we think of her often!), had a team treasure hunt, a costume contest and, of course, impromptu skits. Fabiola, Poseidon, Corvinus, Persephone, Philomena, Daria, Aeolus, Sebastian, Agnes, Lucy (complete with a pair of eyeballs to carry around), Julius Caesar, Romulus, Lawrence and many more were present.
Two teams performed the story of Perseus bringing back the head of Medusa. The cleverness and creativity with which the story was reenacted was extremely entertaining! (So glad I didn't have to judge).

Visiting Katrina

Picnic at Cuesta Park
Originally uploaded by Chez VH
I had a nice, though short, visit with my friend Katrina. We visited, went shopping and enjoyed a wonderful little picnic (with a lot of help from Trader Joe's) at one of my favorite parks.

She was in very good spirits and very much appreciates all the prayers!

I received these lovely little messages from her children after I returned home:

K - I miss you and I hope you come back soon! You can come anytime you want because our house is free for anyone.

E - How are you? What are you doing right now?

R - I love you Leasha and I hope you have a nice day!

San Francisco

Cable Car
Originally uploaded by Chez VH
So, I just returned home from San Francisco on Monday night to some friendly visitors in town (not to mention gardens and school plans that are in not-the-best-of-shape).

Because I was taking a solo trip (my first since I've been married as I've always had at least a little one along on previous trips) I packed light and didn't have a car. When I flew into SF last week, I took the BART up to Market Street and had a Panini at a sidewalk cafe in the beautiful sunny weather. Delightful! I hopped this cable car (haven't been on one in twenty years) out to visit Alice and it was a lovely ride. I took lots of pictures (though our camera does leave something to be desired).

Alice is every bit as lovely as you'd imagine, even on what she'd call a "bad" day. :) It wasn't long before I felt like I'd known her and her children forever and I can't wait for our two families to meet some day.

We visited Golden Gate Park and had Oolong tea and other goodies at the Japanese Tea Garden. Alice's older girls and I also visited St. Ignatius Church while the little ones took a rest in the car with mom. It was fun to meet with other children who were so interested and enthusiastic about beautiful art and architecture.

Last Night of the Trip

Before I get into more details of our love2learn get together - which may take quite awhile - I'm going to skip ahead to the last day of our vacation. We broke up the last leg of our trip with an overnight stay in western Wisconsin with a family of TAC friends who were hosting Nutmeg and family at the same time! (She has some pictures of their visit here).

Now, I have to say that the advantage of spending the night at friends' houses is that there is plenty of time to chat with said friends after all the kiddos had gone to bed even if this does add up to a certain amount of sleep deprivation. Such was the case at this house, though I thought Nutmeg and I were very restrained in only staying up til 12:30 (at one of our other stops I managed a chat until 2:30 in the morning). It was delightful to catch up with her in real time and I enjoyed comparing notes on children, homeschooling and various challenges that make up those two.

The next morning consisted of several amazing large-scale meals with loads of munchkins, some bow-shooting on the part of John and most of our kids (they had a blast!) and a mini-15-year-TAC reunion (consisting of a great deal of reminiscing and laughing out on the enormous front porch) with my classmate Elizabeth. It was great to re-connect with her (I also taught with her for a year after we graduated) and we've already made some tentative get-together plans for the future. The kids were excited to hear this as they instantly bonded with new friends galore.

What a terrific way to end our incredible journey of faith, friends and family - especially with only a handful of hours to drive on the last day. We are indeed blessed!

One other thing that struck me on this trip (besides the blessed part!) is the richness of people and places to see that aren't so very far from home. I've sometimes had a touch of envy regarding friends who took major European tours for their honeymoon (John and I camped at Monterrey for just a few days) and I certainly dream of leisurely tours of foreign lands. But at the moment I can hardly imagine a more pleasurable or enriching vacation than what we just experienced - scenery, history, culture, science, friends, family-time, pilgrimage and more all wrapped up into a great feast for body, mind and soul.
