The Grand Canyon was absolutely spectacular and it was neat for us that we all saw it for the first time at the same time. Rather surprising really, since John traveled with his family all over the West when he was a kid - and for goodness sakes - I'm from California! The weather was quite cold and rainy, but that may have actually enhanced the view. I imagine that, like the Badlands of South Dakota, the layers of reds and browns are a bit more vibrant when they're wet.
John and I were both a little anxious about kid safety at the canyon. This was somewhat alleviated by learning that most of the accidents happen from people over doing a large climb up and down the canyon and getting disoriented because of altitude sickness (or going outside of the railing to get a better snapshot). We weren't doing anything quite that adventurous (we really didn't have the time).
Once we got there, we made a simple rule: "You're not allowed to touch the railings." I held onto Frank's hand anyway, but everything went very smoothly and easily there.
Once we finally got to the viewing area and looked at the canyon, my first thought was: "That can't be real!"
We enjoyed reading some geologic detail about the Grand Canyon from Roadside Geology of Arizona and bought a lovely topographical map of the Grand Canyon at a gas station in Seligman for a very reasonable price. I already have it hanging on the wall alongside some panoramic postcards and hope to spend a little more time with that.
