Perspective

A little thought I heard on Relevant Radio from Milwaukee's Archbishop Dolan:

"Church history gives you remarkable serenity."

What do you suppose he meant?

That when you study Church history and get some perspective from it, the troubles of our own times seem less impossible and hopeless.

Reinhold Niebuhr said:

Nothing worth doing is completed in our lifetime,
Therefore, we are saved by hope.
Nothing true or beautiful or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history;
Therefore, we are saved by faith.
Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone.
Therefore, we are saved by love.

I look at this quote as an example of how knowing Church history helps us to more fully live out our vocation as members of the Mystical Body of Christ: Church suffering, Church militant, and Church triumphant.

Too deep for a Tuesday morning? Perhaps!
