I never even heard of NBC's America's Got Talent show until last Friday when my in-laws passed this story along to us ...
A Catholic homeschool family from California - with six children - play Irish fiddle and do Irish dancing together. Even Mom and Dad are part of the act and play music with them. They made it to this NBC caller-voting talent show and will be in the final round tonight.
In their semi-final round, which they won on audience approval, they went before the judges and something amazing happened. You really should see the video. One of the judges said that if they wanted to win the million dollars, the five older kids should "sack mum and dad and baby brother". The children protested and the audience positively howled. Another judge agreed that it wasn't worth the million dollars to split up the family. Check out this interesting interplay (and their remarkable talent) here. We'll be watching and voting tonight.

I just saw the show for the first time yesterday and as soon as I saw, large family...celtic music... I knew they had to be Cathlolic! Sure enough clips of the family at home showed a crucifix on the wall. I hope this good Catholic family wins the money, but I can't see NBC wanting that to be. Anyway they are all already winners in so many ways! Thanks for posting on this, I can't belive how ignored this has been by the catholic blogsphere!
I thought it was an important story for a number of reasons - most especially their "confrontation" with the judge after their semi-final performance. What a great witness for the importance of family. (There are a lot of things tied in with this for me - including the willingness of the family to be involved in something that can be scary and put their family in the limelight enough to be appreciated but also to be criticized or even ridiculed - gives an interesting picture of 'in the world, but not of the world' to me). In the video linked from my post, I was amazed and slightly awed to hear the third judge tell the family that it wasn't worth the million dollars to split up the family! (Of course it would be particularly exciting if they won in spite of keeping the family together). My kids are eagerly looking forward to the award presentation tonight to see if they won.
I was surprised not to see other post on Catholic blogs about this too. I think Catholic bloggers probably don't watch a lot of television. We actually heard about Celtic Spring through some friends of their family (some of our relatives in fact).

So, what happened????
I'm late to the party for this, so missed the whole thing ....
We watched in great anticipation and were thrilled to pieces when they showed up in the top 5 (they split the group in two). Then they chose two who were runners up and won cars - Celtic Spring was in the remaining three. But alas, they were the remaining ones (which means, I think, that they placed 4 or 5 in the voting). We were disappointed, but, as much as I hate to use such cliches generally, they really were winners. I'm sure they received great publicity for their family group, certainly were a beautiful witness for the idea of family and showed America that they have an amazing talent.
